Borovitza Gamza 2018
This fresh, elegant, medium-bodied red is a gorgeous expression of Gamza, an indigenous Bulgarian grape variety. Gamza wines are sometimes compared to New World Pinot Noir for their freshness and red fruit aromas. Borovitza Gamza shows delicate aromas of red currants, plums as well as notes of baking spice, typical for this grape variety. The palate is pure and complex, with lively ripe red cherry & blackberry notes, elegant silky tannins and a fresh character.
The grapes for Borovitza Gamza were sourced from low-yielding 50+ years old vines grown in Danube Plain in northern Bulgaria. The wine was made with minimal intervention to preserve the primary fruit aromas; no sulphites were used and it was bottled unfiltered. Borovitza is one the most renowned boutique producers in Bulgaria. They were amongst the first in the country to make elegant, terroir-driven wines as opposed to overripe mass market hits.Â

Caroline Gilby MW:
Ogy and Adriana had found that there were some amazing old plots of vines in this virtually abandoned corner of the country, producing fantastically intense fruit. And because this area is relatively cooler than the rest of the country (especially at night), but with long sunshine hours, ancient soils and good sloping sites, the wines have great potential for elegance, complexity and long life.
