Description

This skin-contact wine comes from a small Slovenian winery, located next to the border with the Italian region of Friuli. This part of the world has long standing traditions of orange winemaking. Burja Bela Vipava Orange spent a week in contact with the grape skins, acquiring a beautiful dark golden colour and a depth of flavours. It was wildly fermented and aged in big oak foudres. Savoury and herbal notes are wrapped around a core of orchard fruits, apples and apple cider, with an elegant touch of citruses.

Smooth and well-balanced on the palate, Burja Bela Vipava Orange is perfectly enjoyable on its own. It also makes great pairings with flavourful food, such as Middle-Eastern and Asian cuisine. The blend is made up of Istrian Malvasia, Welschriesling and Rebula.

Wine Origins

Slovenia

Slovenian wine, particularly white and orange, is trending across the world. The wine region of Primorska, which includes Brda and Vipava Valley, is a true gem of the European wine map. Set between the Adriatic coast and the Alps, it is a gorgeous landscape of rolling hills and terraced vineyards. Primorska shares a border with Italy’s Collio. Historically both regions were part of one Slovenian-speaking area. Grapes grown in Primorska and north-eastern Italy are similar, however wines are distinctively different.

Burja

Burja vineyards are located in northern Slovenia, in Vipava Valley, along the northern Adriatic coast. The Lavrenčičs family have been making wine here for three generations. In 2009, Primoz Lavrenčič decided to go solo and founded his own project. The winery is named after the ferocious ‘Burja’ wind which defines agricultural traditions of the region. Primoz follows organic and biodynamic principles, creating wines with a deep connection to this land.

Istrian Malvasia

Istrian Malvasia got its name from the largest peninsula in Croatia and is considered to be an indigenous Istrian wine variety. DNA tests proved that it is a distinctive grape, different to the other numerous types of Malvasia found across the Mediterranean. Today, in addition to Istria, this grape is widely spread in neighbouring Slovenia and Italy. Istrian Malvasia wines are fresh and fruity with bright aromas of apple and apricot.
