Description

Chatzivaritis is an iconic boutique producer of Northern Greece. This red blend is their flagship wine, coming from the appellation of Goumenissa, famous since ancient times. Legend has it that Goumenissa wine, made of the indigenous Xinomavro and Negoska grapes, was a favourite of Philip, the King of Macedonia, father of Alexander the Great. The modern version of this legendary wine could easily become wine of the kings as well. Chatzivaritis Goumenissa reveals complex aromas of black and red cherries, subtle notes of flowers, cloves, nutmeg and vanilla. It is fragrant, elegant, well-balanced and shows real class.

Aged in French oak barrels, Chatzivaritis Goumenissa is full-bodied and fresh, with smooth tannins and a long aftertaste. The blend is 70% Xinomavro and 30% Negoska. The grapes come from organic vineyards in Macedonia.

Jammie Goode, wineanorak.com, 92/100 (2016 vintage):

This is 70% Xinomavro and 30% Negoska, and it’s the style of the wines the estate made before Chloi was properly involved. 12 months in small oak. Savoury and stylish with bright red cherries and raspberries. Has good acidity and finesse with lovely purity. There’s some oak here but it is harmonious.
