Douloufakis Dafnios Red 2019
Liatiko is an ancient Cretan grape which dates back to 3rd-2nd Century BC. Douloufakis Dafnios Red is one of the most renowned wines made of this rare variety. Liatiko makes delicate wines of beautiful ruby colour, with aromas of fresh red fruits, such as cranberries and sour cherries, paired with authentic Greek flavours of olives, herbs and spices. Medium-bodied and fresh, the wine has no shortage of structure, with grippy tannins and a vibrant acidity.
Douloufakis Dafnios Red will evolve gracefully in the bottle, gradually developing exquisite notes of leather, olive tapenade and spices. However, it is perfectly enjoyable now. Pair it with pasta with tomato sauce, pizza and other Mediterranean dishes. Â

Jancis Robinson, 16+/20 points:
Light to mid ruby. Looks more mature than 2018, but this is typical for Liatiko colour. Like the colour, the aroma is typically more mature than you might expect for a 2018: leathery red fruits, some dried cherry but also a gentle herbacious freshness. On the palate, this is fresh, but also more meaty/savoury, with umami flavours that you would normally get from an older wine but which are, I think, typical at a younger age in Liatiko. Tannins are dry, slightly grainy and firm. Absolutely needs food now, but should have a long life ahead. If you are tired of Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah, try this slightly rustic but characterful wine… This and the Dafnios Vidiano would make a great starting pair if you have not yet ventured into Cretan wines.
