Description

This is a gorgeous natural sparkling wine from Slovenia's young winemaking talent, Matija Žerjav. Matic Mea Pet Nat greets with delicious notes of lime pie, lemon and lemon peel, followed by nuances of meadow herbs, yellow apples and pears. On the palate, it is fruity and fresh, a little bready, a little mineral and very well balanced, with a lovely fizz and a pleasant citrusy aftertaste.

Matija Žerjav follows biodynamic principles both in the vineyard and in the cellar. The grapes for Matic Mea Pet Nat were hand harvested from 43-year-old Sipon (Slovenian name for Furmint) vines. The juice spent 22 days on skins in clay amphorae, followed by natural fermentation in steel tanks. After that, the wine was moved using gravity to bottles where the fermentation process continues, resulting in gentle fizz and an absolutely unique, authentic wine.

Slovenia

Slovenian wine, particularly white and orange, is trending across the world. The wine region of Primorska, which includes Brda and Vipava Valley, is a true gem of the European wine map. Set between the Adriatic coast and the Alps, it is a gorgeous landscape of rolling hills and terraced vineyards. Primorska shares a border with Italy’s Collio. Historically both regions were part of one Slovenian-speaking area. Grapes grown in Primorska and north-eastern Italy are similar, however wines are distinctively different.

Matic

Matija Žerjav, known as Matic to his friends, is one Slovenia's youngest winemaking talents. Having taken over his family vineyards at the age of 24, he quickly earned a reputation for his expressive natural wines. Matic' 9 hectares of vineyards are found in Starjerska region, in north-eastern Slovenia. He cultivates his vines organically and biodynamically and the resulting wines truly express the land, as well as the personality of the winemaker.

Sipon

Sipon is the Slovenian name for Furmint, the grape behind the acclaimed Hungarian sweet wine, Tokaji. In the 19th-early 20th Century, Furmint spread across the Austro-Hungarian empire, making its way to modern Slovenia. There, it is mainly vinified dry, making characterful white wines of outstanding complexity. Supposedly, the name “Sipon” is a corruption of the nickname Napoleon’s soldiers gave to this wine: “Si c’est bon” for "It’s so good".
