Description

Aleksandrouli is a rare indigenous grape used predominantly as part of the blend for the famous Georgian Khvanchkara wine. A wine made of 100% Aleksandrouli is a rare find, not to mention Aleksandrouli made in qvevri. Mildiani Private Selection Qvevri Aleksandrouli is a unique, fragrant expression of this often overlooked grape. Pronounced aromas and flavours of violets, ripe raspberries, plums and cherries are followed by velvety texture on the palate. The wine has a refreshing acidity and is beautifully balanced.

The grapes for Mildiani Private Selection Qvevri Aleksandrouli were hand harvested from old vines grown in the Racha-Lechkhumi region in western Georgia. Destemmed and crushed grapes were placed in qvevri – traditional Georgian clay amphorae. The wine was wildly fermented and matured in qvevri according to the age-old Georgian traditions.

Justine Keay, The Buyer:

“Even by Georgian standards Aleksandrouli is a rare variety so finding a qvevri wine made solely from this grape is unusual. Made in tiny volumes – hence the price – this is an astonishingly rich and layered wine already quite developed but likely to become more so. Very fragrant and velvety, this has violets, cherry and raspberries on a long and complex palate.”
