Description

This gorgeously aromatic orange wine is made of the Friulano grape. Friulano is native to northern Italy, but is also widely grown in the neighbouring Slovenia. Nando Jakot Blue Label 2022 reveals generous aromas of ripe apricots and apricot jam, orange marmalade, candied fruit, honeysuckle and elegant floral notes. The palate is rich and concentrated, with generous flavours of oranges and orange skins and a subtle spicy kick.

Slovenian winemaker, Andrej Kristančič, earned a reputation for his masterfully done, complex, well-balanced skin-contact wines. Nando Jakot Blue Label 2022 is a wonderful example of his craftsmanship. Smooth and easy drinking, it is a great introduction into the skin-contact winemaking. The grapes underwent a natural fermentation, with two weeks of maceration on the skins.

Wine Origins

Slovenia

Slovenian wine, particularly white and orange, is trending across the world. The wine region of Primorska, which includes Brda and Vipava Valley, is a true gem of the European wine map. Set between the Adriatic coast and the Alps, it is a gorgeous landscape of rolling hills and terraced vineyards. Primorska shares a border with Italy’s Collio. Historically both regions were part of one Slovenian-speaking area. Grapes grown in Primorska and north-eastern Italy are similar, however wines are distinctively different.

Nando

Nando winery is found on the Italian border. Out of 5.5 hectares of vineyards, about one half is located in Slovenia and another half - on the Italian side. The vineyards are organically farmed and wine is made in a low intervention style - wildly fermented, with a minimum sulphur added. Nando is widely famous for its excellent, authentic orange wines. Andrej Kristancic now runs the winery named after his grandfather.

Friulano

Friulano grape is responsible for the majority of white wines of Friuli in north-eastern Italy. It is also widely grown in the neighbouring Slovenia where it is known as Jakot. The variety used to be known as Tokai Friulano, however it is not related to the Hungarian wine region of Tokaji. Friulano makes lively and fruity wines with notes of citruses, flowers and almonds, and often a touch of minerality.
