Made from the most acclaimed Bulgarian indigenous grape, Rumelia Merul Mavrud is an unmistakably southern wine. It has a gorgeous deep ruby colour and reveals luscious aromas of ripe black forest fruit, blackberries, black cherries. These are complemented by hints of coffee and violets. The palate is just as rich. Ripe tannins and plenty of fresh and jammy berry flavours go hand in hand with pleasant spicy undertones.

The grapes for Rumelia Merul Mavrud were hand harvested from organically farmed vineyards in the historic Thracian Valley, in the south of Bulgaria. The wine has not seen any oak, letting the primary grape aromas hit the spotlight.

Rumelia

Rumelia winery was established in 2006 in the town of Panagyurishte, located in the picturesque Thracian Valley. Vineyards are nestled at the foothills of the mountain known as Sredna Gora. Warm temperatures throughout the year, as well as sand-clay soils are perfect for black grape varieties. The winery is famous for its delicious fruit-forward wines made of Mavrud, the most acclaimed Bulgarian grape.

Mavrud

The pride of Bulgarian winemaking, Mavrud makes full-bodied reds with an excellent ageing potential. It is an indigenous variety which has been grown in Bulgaria since ancient times. Supposedly, it originates from the Thracian Valley in the south of the country. The word “Mavrud” comes from the Greek word for “black” which refers to the wine’s deep ruby-purple colour.
