Zambartas Koukouvagia Red 2022
This lush, fruit-forward red comes from Zambartas, a small family run winery in Cyprus. Zambartas have been making authentic terroir-driven wines since 2006. Their Koukouvagia range, meaning ‘Owl’ in Greek, is all about easy to drink, fruity, aromatic wines which can be enjoyed on their own or with a variety of dishes. Zambartas Koukouvagia Red is a blend of Syrah and Mataro (a.k.a. Mourvedre). The wine shows generous flavours of ripe red and black berries, strawberries and forest fruit.
Medium-bodied and juicy on the palate, it is a very pleasant red for every day drinking. Zambartas Koukouvagia Red is a great match for a charcuterie platter, as well pastas with tomato sauce and pizza.
Jancis Robinson, 16/20 points:
Transparent ruby. Fresh and light on the nose. Sweet start and really rather appealing. Soft but not lacking refreshment. Very clean and direct. Fairly simple but reasonably charming.

Wine Origins
Cypriot wine culture dates as far back as 5,000 years ago. Ancient Babylonian texts and the Jerusalem Talmud speak of using Cypriot wine in religious rituals. Revelers from ancient Greece used to come to Cyprus to celebrate Aphrodite with quaffs of local sweet wine, Commandaria. Today, Cyprus wine culture is experiencing a true renaissance. A new generation of winemakers champion indigenous grapes and local terroirs, producing world-class wines with a Cypriot character.
The roots of this family winery can be traced back to the 1970s, when Akis Zambartas completed his studies at the University of Montpellier and returned to Cyprus. He became the first islander to have studied oenology at university level. Akis is considered a pioneer of Cypriot wines, dedicating a big part of his life to studying and recording indigenous grape varieties. In 2006, his son Marcos joined him on this path. Together they launched Zambartas winery, which champions authentic terroir-driven wines.
