Zambartas Xynisteri 2023
This bright, aromatic white comes from Zambartas, a small family run winery in Cyprus. Zambartas have been making authentic terroir-driven wines since 2006. Xynisteri is an ancient indigenous variety, native to the island. Zambartas Xynisteri is sourced from low-yielding old vines grown at 850 metres above sea level. The wine shows plenty of weight and pronounced aromas of stone and tropical fruit, peaches, apricots, pineapples and citruses.
On the palate, it’s fresh and complex, with fruit flavours complemented by subtle hints of minerality. It is a beautifully balanced wine from one of the leading boutique producers of Cyprus. We suggest pairing Zambartas Xynisteri with lemon butter chicken, grilled fish and quiche Lorraine.Â

Jancis Robinson MW, 16.5/20 points:
Chock-full of character. Real bite and grapefruit-peel finish after a great whack of textured lemon-cough-drop fruit on the palate. This is proper wine! And not a silly price. Something really different and nicely packaged.

Wine Origins
Cypriot wine culture dates as far back as 5,000 years ago. Ancient Babylonian texts and the Jerusalem Talmud speak of using Cypriot wine in religious rituals. Revelers from ancient Greece used to come to Cyprus to celebrate Aphrodite with quaffs of local sweet wine, Commandaria. Today, Cyprus wine culture is experiencing a true renaissance. A new generation of winemakers champion indigenous grapes and local terroirs, producing world-class wines with a Cypriot character.
The roots of this family winery can be traced back to the 1970s, when Akis Zambartas completed his studies at the University of Montpellier and returned to Cyprus. He became the first islander to have studied oenology at university level. Akis is considered a pioneer of Cypriot wines, dedicating a big part of his life to studying and recording indigenous grape varieties. In 2006, his son Marcos joined him on this path. Together they launched Zambartas winery, which champions authentic terroir-driven wines.
Xynisteri is an indigenous white grape native to Cyprus. It is one of the most widely cultivated Cyprus grapes: about 20-30% of the island vineyards are under Xynisteri. The variety has been known since ancient times. However, for many centuries it has been used in blends, mainly to create a sweet wine known as Commandaria. Nowadays Xynisteri is finally coming out of the shadows making zesty, fresh, elegant white wines.
