Healthy mulled wine recipes

Sticking to a healthy diet during Christmas is certainly a challenge. But here is the good news: we are on your side with our healthy mulled wine recipes! If you have been avoiding this heartwarming Christmas drink because of high sugar content, there is no need to do so any longer. In fact, mulled wine can be made with no added sugar whatsoever.

What’s the secret? Naturally sweet wine! It contains only naturally occurring sugars found in the grapes. Ok, that’s sugar too, but much healthier than the refined stuff. Essentially, it’s like eating fresh grapes. What’s more, naturally sweet wines are full of juicy berry flavours and absolutely delicious, both on their own and when infused with all the Christmas spices.

Here are three easy-to make, luscious and healthy mulled-wine recipes which will bring you lots of joy and zero extra pounds. Just remember the main mulled wine tip: steam it, do not boil it! Unless you want an alcohol-free version. The key is to allow the wine slowly infuse with all the flavours from the fruit and the spices.

And the best thing: throughout December, most of our naturally sweet wines are available with a 10% discount. Use voucher code SWEETCHRISTMAS and prepare to spice things up.

How To Make Mulled Wine

Put all the fruits and spices into a large saucepan and add just enough wine to cover the fruits.

Bring the mixture to boil and keep boiling for about 4-5 minutes. This way the fruits and spices will release their flavours and will infuse the wine. It is important not to add all the wine straight away, otherwise the alcohol will evaporate during boiling. Your goal at this stage is to obtain a beautifully aromatic base for your mulled wine.

After boiling for 4-5 min, turn the heat down to low and add the rest of the wine. Steam for 20-30 minutes without letting it bubble.

Taste for sweetness; if you prefer your mulled wine very sweet, you may want to add a couple of spoons of brown sugar or honey and steam for 5 more minutes.

Strain and poor into mugs. Garnish and enjoy!
